Govt taking steps for water conservation: minister

MULTAN, Jan 3 (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 3rd Jan, 2019 ) ::Provincial Minister for Agriculture Nouman Ahmed Langrial said that drip irrigation and sprinkling systems were being installed on subsidy under a Rs 67 billion ongoing project for conservation and proper usage of water. He said the Punjab government was providing guidance to growers for proper use of available water.

In a statement issued here Thursday, the Minister said the government was providing 60 percent subsidy on drip irrigation system and added that water reached direct into roots of plants in shape of drops through this system. He said the Agriculture department Punjab was providing assistance to growers to promote latest technology for high efficiency irrigation system.

He said that 60 percent water could be saved by installing this system for vegetables, orchard and other crops.

He informed that 5600 cubic metre water was available in 1947 and it decreased by 1000 cubic metre now. He said that it would reach by 800 cubic metre in 2025. He said the country was on seven number among countries who were facing water shortage issues.

Nouman Langrial said that 93 percent of the available water was being used for agriculture purposes and remaining seven percent for daily use. He said that saving each drop of available water was dire need of the hour and urged the masses to pay special focus on water saving.
