ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 20th Sep, 2019 ) :Senior General Physician Dr Ijaz Vohra Friday called upon the public to adopt preventive measures by maintaining cleanliness in and around their homes, eliminating mosquitoes breeding sites water bodies, old tyres, bottles and cover open drinking containers.

Talking to private news channel, he said citizens should play vital role in combating dengue by keeping their homes, offices and workplaces clean.

He said it was impossible to check each of the households, therefore, people's participation was a must as dengue was recognized as a major health concern and worldwide efforts were underway to find a vaccine.

It is a worldwide epidemic and yet there is no cure and vaccine for dengue, therefore, prevention is the most effective method and community participation can play an important role in preventing and controlling the disease.

He asked the people to wear clothes that completely covering body and use the anti-mosquito lotions or mosquito protection net during the night and avoid the unnecessary movement in the morning and in the evening as the dengue mosquito bites during that time.

He said 'Dengue fever' was a mosquito-borne tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. Symptoms begin 3 to 14 days after infection.

Ijaz Vohra said that from today onward mobile teams would go door to door along with health workers to tell women about preventive measures against dengue.

Stressing on the early diagnosis of dengue, he advised people to consult a doctor or visit the nearest hospital at the earliest in case any symptoms of the fever are detected.

He said that the best solution to get rid of this deadly dengue virus, is to create awareness among the people.

He said government has recently taken different steps in this regard, as it has issued different pamphlets, carrying the precautionary measures and symptoms of the disease.

Dr Vohra said infections were mostly mild and pass in about a week without causing severe problems.

Dengue fever is now one of the most common mosquito-borne viral disease in the world but in Pakistan dengue emerged as major concern for public health in the last decade and some people doing politics on this issue.

He added the mosquitoes that carry the dengue viruses were most active from dawn to dusk, but they can also bite at night.

Dr Vohra said that the dengue virus was transmitted by the bite of an infected female Aedes mosquito. When the mosquito feeds on the blood of a person infected with dengue, the virus enters and multiplies within the mosquito.

There is no specific antiviral treatment for dengue fever where as supportive nursing care and careful management of symptoms is the standard treatment, he added.

He said home ramadies also very effective for dengue fever.

Dr Vohra advised the residents to use mosquito net or mosquito repellants like mats and coils in order to stay safe.

He also called for urgent steps by authorities concerned to ensure safe management of solid waste and cleanliness in the country.
