Illegal Appointments Case: Lahore High Court Grants Bail To Mujahid Kamran, Others

A Lahore High Court (LHC) division bench on Wednesday granted bail to Punjab University's former vice chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran and three former registrars in illegal appointments case.
LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 7th Nov, 2018 ) :A Lahore High Court (LHC) division bench on Wednesday granted bail to Punjab University's former vice chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran and three former registrars in illegal appointments case.
The court ordered them to submit surety bonds of Rs500,000 each to avail the benefit of bail.
The bench headed by Justice Ali Baqar Najafi heard the bail petitions filed by Mujahid Kamran, former additional registrar Dr Kamran Abid, former registrar Dr Muhammad Amin Athar and former registrar Dr Liaqat challenging NAB proceedings and their arrest.
During the proceedings, the defence counsel submitted that all appointments were based on merit and in accordance with rules. He contended that all allegations levelled against his clients were baseless. He further submitted that the aged teachers were produced handcuffed in accountability court.
He pleaded with the bench to grant benefit of bail to his clients.
At this, the bench expressed annoyance over producing of the professors handcuffed before the court.
However, the NAB's counsel sought apology over producing them handcuffed. He further contended that the accused were involved in illegal appointments and pleaded with the court to dismiss their bail petition.
The court after hearing arguments of the parties granted bail to all the accused and directed them to submit surety bonds of Rs 500,000 each for availing the relief of bail.
Accused former VC Dr Mujahid Kamran and others were arrested for their alleged involvement of making over 500 illegal appointments, most of them in grade 17 and above, between 2013 and 2016, Dr Kamran was also accused of illegally appointing his wife Dr Shazia Qureshi as the principal of the Punjab University Law College. He was also accused of awarding scholarships to his favourite students.
