India Wants Pakistan to Fulfill Obligations Within SCO on Terrorism Prevention -Ambassador

India wants Pakistan to fulfill its obligations within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) by preventing terrorists on its territory from staging attacks on India, Indian Ambassador to Moscow Bala Venkatesh Varma told Sputnik on Monday

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 25th March, 2019) India wants Pakistan to fulfill its obligations within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) by preventing terrorists on its territory from staging attacks on India, Indian Ambassador to Moscow Bala Venkatesh Varma told Sputnik on Monday.

"We are willing to cooperate with all the members of the SCO. But one of the obligations of the SCO members is not to allow their territory to be used by terrorist groups to attack other countries. That is one of the basic obligations of the SCO. So I hope that all countries of the SCO, particularly Pakistan, which has this particular problem, will take note of its obligations, not only as a UN member its international obligations but also its obligations as an SCO member, not to allow its territory to be used by terrorist groups to attack targets in India," Varma said.

Relations between the neighboring countries escalated in late February, when India carried out an airstrike against what it claimed to be a camp of the Jaish-e-Mohammed militant group in the Pakistani-controlled part of the disputed Kashmir region, in retaliation for the deadly terrorist attack on Indian paramilitary troops on February 14.

While India has accused Pakistan of supporting the militants and having a "direct hand" in the incident, Pakistan, in turn, has rejected the allegations.

However, since then, the countries managed to overcome their difficulties, and last Friday Pakistani Ambassador to Russia Qazi Khalillulah said that Pakistan was ready to cooperate with India within the SCO framework.

Pakistan along with India was granted the status of full SCO member in June 2017, joining China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
