Federal Minister for Law and Justice Barrister Dr. Muhammad Farogh Naseem has said that the International Community must play its role to urge India to fulfill its international obligations regarding the Indus Basin Treaty.
ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 10th Dec, 2018 ) :Federal Minister for Law and Justice Barrister Dr. Muhammad Farogh Naseem has said that the International Community must play its role to urge India to fulfill its international obligations regarding the Indus Basin Treaty.
He stated this while speaking as chief guest at an International Conference on "Water: Future War and Peace in Subcontinent" on Monday organized by Centre for Global Strategic Studies.
The minister said that disputes related to water between Pakistan and India started in 1948, right after both countries became independent. Both parties, he said, complied with the Indus Basin Treaty of 1960 but India has now started using the water from Rivers, Indus, Jehlum and Chenab for Industrial purposes which is a violation of the Treaty.
This water could be only used if it doesn't disrupt water supply to Pakistan but India has unilaterally annulled the Treaty since it can only be done mutually, he maintained.
The minister said that India plans to build dams over Rivers Jehlum and Chenab which is of great concern to Pakistan. He said the world musttake notice of water aggression by India and the World Bank needs to play aneutral role in this regard.
