Karachi City Administration For Stern Action Against Profiteering, Hoarding During Ramadan
The city administration on Wednesday decided to take stern action against profiteers and hoarders with imposition of heavy fines and sending the violators to jails during the holy month of Ramadan
In a meeting chaired by Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Ali Shallwani at his office, it was decided that all the deputy commissioners (DCs) would form teams headed by assistant commissioners concerned for quick and strict action against profiteers and violators of officially fixed prices, said a press release.
On the special directives of the Commissioner Karachi a Ramazan Package was also under consideration with consultation of all stakeholders to ensure availability of edible items on officially fixed prices.
A special campaign would be initiated against profiteering and overcharging in which besides imposition of heavy fines, continuous violators would also be sent to jail.
The meeting decided that before start of Ramadan to prevent hoarding, the DCs concerned would take action in their jurisdictions and ensure arrest of hoarders followed by legal procedure.
The consultations and discussions among officers of City administration, Bureau of Supply, concerned traders and consumers associations were also underway.
He said soon a list of prices of general items would be issued which would be implementable in Ramadan.
The prices of fruit and vegetables would be fixed under the supervision of Sabzi Mandi Market Committee and district East on auction basis daily which would be available on the website of administration.
Besides, the shopkeepers would be bound to display those lists so that the consumers who could not visit the website for confirmation of prices can purchase the items on the prices according to the displayed list.
The DCs have been directed to ensure availability of price lists of vegetables and fruits for consumers being issued on daily basis.
The commissioner said that it was one of the important responsibilities of officers of district administrations to ensure availability of items on officially fixed prices to the consumers.
The officers concerned should visit their areas on daily basis and to bound the shopkeepers not to overcharge consumers.
Commissioner instructed the DCs to take stern legal action against hoarders before the start of Ramadan.
He said that district administration should strengthen its coordination with local communities and play an active role in resolution to the issues of masses.
