Kashmir under siege ahead of India's Independence Day

In occupied Kashmir, ahead of August 15, the India's Independence Day, the number of forces' personnel patrolling every nook and corner of Kashmir has increased manifold with intensified frisking.

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 14th Aug, 2018 ) :In occupied Kashmir, ahead of August 15, the India's Independence Day, the number of forces' personnel patrolling every nook and corner of Kashmir has increased manifold with intensified frisking.

Stringent measures in the name of security have been put in place in all parts of central, south, and north Kashmir, Kashmir Media Service reported on Tuesday.

Intense frisking is underway across Kashmir, especially Srinagar, where main Independence Day function will be held. A witness said there are at least 30 to 40 police barricades from Batamaloo to Dalgate on one side and Hari Singh High Street to Ram Munshi Bag on the other where bikers, and those travelling in four wheelers are stopped, frisked and asked to show the identity. At least 42 close circuit television sets are functional.

Director General of Police (DGP), S P Vaid, while talking to reporters on the sidelines of the full-dress rehearsal at the Sonawar cricket Stadium in Srinagar confirmed the imposition of strict measures saying, "The police and other forces will ensure that the people celebrate I-Day without any fear.

" The stadium, where Governor N N Vohra will unfurl the Indian flag as part of the main event, has been turned into a virtual fortress.

The highway to south Kashmir witnesses a higher incidence of the forces stopping and frisking vehicles. A number of check-points have been set up at various junctions and main entry-points to Srinagar. "A huge number of paramilitary and police personnel have been stationed near sensitive locations while the venues of the Independence Day events have also been sealed," said a police official, while talking to media.

In Jammu, authorities have deployed hundreds of additional police and paramilitary troopers across the city. The check points in the city are being manned by troops of Indian army, paramilitary forces and police.
