KP Cabinet Approves Amendments LG Bill 2019, Paying Way For New Local Government System

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet approved here on Thursday the Amendment Local Government Bill, 2019, abolishing post of district Nazim and the district council besides introducing so many other changes to the exiting local government system in the province
PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 18th Apr, 2019 ):The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet approved here on Thursday the Amendment Local Government Bill, 2019, abolishing post of district Nazim and the district council besides introducing so many other changes to the exiting local government system in the province.
The provincial cabinet meeting was convened to take up a single point agenda to finalize the draft of new Local Government (LG) system in the province as the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) deadline of April 30 for amendments to Local Government Act 2013 was drawing closer.
The meeting, which was chaired by Chief Minister Mahmood Khan, reviewed section by section of the proposed Local Government Amendment Bill, 2019.
The changes also include the abolition of the district tier and the new Amendment bill provided for a local government system which comprises two-tier at tehsil and village council.
The village council would comprise six to seven councilors and tehsil Nazim would be elected through direct elections.
Nazim of a village council would be a member of Tehsil council which would be a center of powers. Moreover mayor of Peshawar would be directly elected through both councils.
Talking to media, Minister for Local Government Shahram Khan Tarakai said the new local government would comprise Tehsil, Village, and Neighborhood councils, adding under the new Amendment Bill, Nazims would be called as chairmen.
He said city governments would be introduced at all divisional headquarters and head of the city government would be called as Mayor who would be directly elected.
