'Millions of lives can be saved by implementing UNGA Resolution 2011'

Rescue 1122 Director General Dr. Rizwan Naseer on Tuesday said millions of lives could be saved by implementing the UN General Assembly Resolution 2011 marking 2011 to 2020 as the Decade of Action for Road Safety and implementing the World Health Organization (WHO) five strategic pillars of road safety.

LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 23rd Oct, 2018 ) :Rescue 1122 Director General Dr. Rizwan Naseer on Tuesday said millions of lives could be saved by implementing the UN General Assembly Resolution 2011 marking 2011 to 2020 as the Decade of Action for Road Safety and implementing the World Health Organization (WHO) five strategic pillars of road safety.

He expressed these views while addressing a workshop on "National Guidelines on Road Safety Engineering & National Road Safety Action Plan 2018-2022" organized by NTU International, Denmark on behalf of Ministry of Communications, Islamabad at the Managers Training Centre, Emergency Services academy Lahore.

The DG Rescue 1122 said the Trauma Registry programme in 2013 which revealed that over 900 Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) were being managed by rescue alone on daily basis in Punjab and so far, rescue had responded to over 1.9 million road accidents' emergencies.

Addressing on the occasion, Ms Rosemary Rouse, the road safety expert while introducing the objectives of the workshop said that main theme to organize this workshop was consultation with road engineering entities of Punjab on drafted road safety engineering guidelines.

She said the objective of this workshop was to experience road Safety Engineering practices with Punjab based engineering community and to finalize the same for implementation in the community base on the recommendation of this workshop.

Road Safety Engineering Specialist Edorado Mazzia, briefed about national guidelines on road safety engineering including sustainable safety principles, speed management, road engineering, speed and risk of fatality, road engineering measures to reduce speed, road infrastructure safety management and capacity building & treating cash risk & crash sites.

It was unanimously recommended by the experts that the speed limit of all vehicles should be limited up to 50km/h in urban areas excluding Lahore Canal Expressway and Ring Road.

It was also recommended that designing of U-turns & Under Passes and Road engineering would also be made according to recommended guidelines, whereas Road Safety Audit of all newly constructed roads should also be mandatory.

DG Rescue Punjab while giving concluding remarks said that road traffic crashes could be significantly reduced through effective enforcement of traffic laws and taking effective steps according to the UN WHO five strategic pillars of road safety.

The workshop was attended by team leader, NTU consultant Dr Kamran Ahmed, Chief Engineer Engineering Consultancy Service Punjab (ECSP) Khairat Hussain, Principal Engr Infrastructure Azam Farhan and others participated in this workshops.
