Monsoon rain caused one dead amid landslide in AJK: NDMA

As many as one dead has been reported in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) amid landslide during last 24 hours due to heavy rainfall on August 6.

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in its daily monsoon situation report has revealed that due to monsoon downpour landslide took place at Kahori, District Muzaffarabad.

The report said that significant rainfall was reported in Islamabad and Rawalpindi from last night including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir in last 24 hours including Islamabad 206 mm, Shinkiari 148 mm, Domel 103 mm and Kotli 102 mm.

It also included Muzaffarabad 101 mm, Daggar 101 mm, Marala 98 mm, Sialkot 97 mm, Tandali 97 mm, Kallar 88 mm, Balakot 80 mm, Bandi Abbaspur 79 mm, Garhidupatta 72 mm, Haraman 64 mm, Brarkot 62 mm, Murree 60 mm, Jhelum 48 mm, Chakothi 44 mm and Kakul 40 mm.

It also mentioned that maximum water level observed in Nullah Lai at Kattarian was 14.8 feet and at Gawalmandi was 12.5 feet while the water level receded later and water was flowing at normal level whereas the current situation was normal in Nullah Lai.

However, standing water was reported in different areas of Rawalpindi as Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Rawalpindi, Rawalpindi Cantonment board, Chaklala Cantonment Board, Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) and Rescue 1122, Rawalpindi were undertaking necessary response measures to drain the accumulated water.

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast for next 24 hours as wide-spread thunderstorm and rain with isolated heavy falls and one or two very heavy falls were expected over the Upper Catchments of Rivers Indus, Jhelum and Chenab alongwith Hazara, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala and Sargodha Divisions.

The weather prediction further said that scattered thunderstorm with isolated heavy falls was expected over Peshawar, Kohat, Malakand and Lahore Divisions along with upper catchments of Rivers Ravi and Sutlej.

Isolated thunderstorm and rain was expected over Faisalabad, Sahiwal and D.G. Khan Divisions along with Northeast Balochistan, it added.

The forecast said moderate to heavy rainfall with one or two very heavy falls was expected over Kashmir, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the week while the wet spell was likely to continue from 8 August to 9 August.

The report claimed that following roads were blocked in Gilgit Baltistan including Shimshal Valley Road at Phurjrik and road to Batswat village, Tehsil Ishkoman, District Ghizer where work was in progress by district administration to restore the roads. All other roads and railway routes across the country were clear, the report said.
