Multi-pronged Strategy Afoot To Prevent Suicide Incidents In GB

Gilgit Baltistan government has worked out a multi-pronged strategy to arrest growing suicide incidents in the area by addressing their root causes.

In preliminary phase, sources said, deputy commissioners had sought from police stations in their respective districts specially Ghizer and Hunza reports containing full information about the suicide incidents which had taken place in all districts of the Gilgit Baltistan so far, First Information Reports (FIRs) and forensic reports.
Later, a task force headed by secretary social welfare Asim Tawana would be constituted and its members include representatives from home department, religious and social organizations, university's academicians and psychiatrics who would go through these comprehensive information reports minutely to detect reasons behind such unfortunate incidents in the GB.
The source revealed helpline would also be set up to prevent recurrence of such incidents and added that the cases would be referred to the concerned departments keeping in view nature of complaints in this regard.
The plan also include training sessions for the teachers who would sensitize students and their parents to prevent these nasty incidents by engaging the youth in healthy activities and enable them live more positively.
In broader spectrum, the sources added the known reasons for suicide incidents include sexual harassments, poverty, unemployment and marriage-related issues. However, more factors or reasons would be diagnosed during the anti-suicide exercise which had started off.
The source said chief secretary was seriously working toimprove situation and celebrate 2019 as suicide-free year in GB.
