Nawaz Does Not Record Statement In Flagship Investment Reference

Former prime minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif did not record his statement before the Accountability Court (AC) of Islamabad in the Flagship Investment corruption reference on Monday due to non-preparation.

Nawaz's counsel Khawaja Haris informed the court that he wanted to first cross-examine the National Accounatbility Bureau's (NAB) Investigation Officer (IO) Muhammad Kamran and then his client would record his statement as he was not still prepared for it.

AC Judge Arshad Malik heard the reference. Accused Nawaz Sharif also attended the court proceedings.

The defence counsel also stated that they wanted to submit some written objections on the NAB IO's statement, which was allowed by the court.

During the cross-examination, the NAB investigation officer informed the court that he had completed his investigation on August 29, 2017 under which the reference was filed against the accused.

One of the two mutual legal assistance (MLAs) written to the UK Central Authority in July 2017 was related to his investigation in which the information regarding the Nelson, Nescol and Comber companies were sought, he added.

The judge asked the defence counsel to ask only relevant queries to the NAB witness.

Khawaja Haris said that so many people were assisting the witness to answer his questions.

Judge Arshad Malik observed that every minute detail of the witness's statement should come on record.

NAB Deputy Prosecutor Sardar Muzafar Abbasi also objected over the defence queries, who, he said, was asking irrelevant questions.

Later, the court adjourned the case till Tuesday.
