ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 19th Jul, 2025) Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik Saturday said the Authority is taking comprehensive measures to respond to any emergency situation and this year’s monsoon 2024-25 witnessed an increase in intensity by 50 to 60 percent over previous years which NDMA had communicated four months in advance.
In an exclusive conversation with ptv news Channel, the Chairman NDMA highlighted the agency’s proactive and timely response to the 2024-25 monsoon, which has intensified by 60% above average.
He added that under the Prime Minister’s guidance, all armed forces, PDMAs, and NDMA are on the same page and coordinating efforts this year, with comprehensive plans arranged to ensure effective disaster management.
In response to the query, he explained that this year the monsoon arrived earlier than usual. Whereas it typically begins in August, this time it started in July.
He emphasized that NDMA has mobilized with full coordination across all levels, from district to provincial Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs), ensuring a unified and efficient approach to disaster preparedness and management.
This well-coordinated effort involves not only government agencies but also key stakeholders such as NGOs and industries, who were brought on board four months in advance to help mitigate the impact of this unusually severe monsoon season, he mentioned.
The Chairman further detailed the comprehensive measures NDMA has implemented to address the challenges posed by this year’s heightened monsoon intensity.
He explained that, due to global warming, Pakistan is experiencing severe disasters and accelerated glacier melting caused by climate change, which is expected to result in higher-than-usual rainfall during this monsoon
season.
He said the Authority’s National Emergency Operations Center is capable of issuing advance alerts 4 to 6 months prior to any emergency situation, adding, this enables timely and effective response planning.
He mentioned that the NDMA utilizes drones, early warning systems such as global satellite portals and global glacier monitoring portals.
They also collect timely data using specialized software, monitor water flow and track landslides through dedicated portals.
Additionally, they remain active on both international and national media platforms 24/7, with experts and young officers appointed to ensure rapid response and coordination, he added.
When asked further, he said that the situation this year is still manageable according to early information. Sadly, 180 people have died and 500 were injured, partly due to individual mistakes.
He referred to the Swat incident to highlight this.
He also pointed out that people can get all updates from their mobile app, which includes information like area capacity and population.
He stressed the importance of people utilizing media platforms to stay updated on any climatic conditions, as experts and apps remain alert 24 hours a day for any emergency situations.
