No Political Meddling In University Affairs: Punjab Govenror

Punjab Govenror Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar Saturday said that there would be no political interference in the appointment of vice chancellors and deans of public-sector universities as the government believed in merit and transparency.
Addressing the 126th convocation of the Punjab University (PU) here, he said he was chancellor of the university and the government believed in right person for the right job.
He said the government would extend maximum support for making the Punjab University one of the best universities of the world.
The convocation was attended by Chairman Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) Prof Dr Nizamuddin, Vice Chancellor (VC) PU Prof Dr Niaz Ahmed, members of the syndicate and the PU Senate, teachers, MPhil and PhD graduates and a large number of students.
The governor further said the principles of merit, transparency and accountability must be adopted in order to improve international ranking of the universities in the country.
He said that Prime Minister Imran Khan and his team understood that youth were an asset for the country and hope for the future.
He said provision of education to the young was the top priority of the government.
Ch Sarwar said the golden principles of Allama Dr Muhammad Iqbal and Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah would have to be adopted in order to put the country on the path to progress and prosperity.
The governor said that education was a key to success of societies, adding that the nations,which spent on education and research were able to achieve glory and international acclaim and such countries ruled the world.
He said that wealth, power and prestige were useless if they were not brought into use for service of humanity. He advised the young students to respect their parents, and never lose touch with their roots.
The governor advised students to never shirk work as it added to their dignity, adding that he was happy to be back as the chancellor Punjab University and attended the convocation as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, PU VC Dr Niaz Ahmed said that the Punjab University had improved its ranking among the Asian universities by 39 points and now it stands at 193.
He demanded the Punjab government pay for 313 kanals of land acquired by the previous government or award an alternative piece of land to it so that the PU could build a teaching hospital there.
As many as 103 students were awarded PhD degrees while 1051 were given MPhil degress at the ceremony.
Later, Punjab Governor Ch Muhammad Sarwar inaugurated the sub-campus of the University of Faisalabad (UoF).
