Provincial Minister for Excise and Texation GB Hadir khan Tuesday said that Northern Areas were home to precious and semi precious stones deposits which if properly exploited could generate considerable revenue for the GB.

The provincial government of Gilgit Baltistan is taking corrective steps to utilize this hidden treasure by adopting positive policies for proper utilization and revenue generation through the available deposits.

The Departments of Gems and Minerals are conducting different training courses for cutting and polishing of precious and semi precious stones.

Some NGOs were also working for the development of gems sector in Gilgit Baltistan.

He added that the cutting and polishing of stones can increase the worth of any rough stone by 50 to 100 times. Many departments have imported foreign cutting and polishing machinery in Gilgit Baltistan. The formulation of mines lease policy for the traders of Gilgit Baltistan was also being mulled, he concluded.
