Presidential election in KP assembly underway peacefully

Polling in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly to elect 13th President of Pakistan for next five years is underway peacefully with Nighat Aurakzai of Pakistan Peoples' Party (PPP) casting first vote.

PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 4th Sep, 2018 ) :Polling in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly to elect 13th President of Pakistan for next five years is underway peacefully with Nighat Aurakzai of Pakistan Peoples' Party (PPP) casting first vote.

The Election Commission of Pakistan has completed all preparations and arrangements for smooth conduct of election and Chief Justice Peshawar High Court (PHC), Justice Waqar Ahmed Seth who is a presiding officer of the election visited the assembly's building on Monday and reviewed arrangement for the Presidential Election polling which started in 10.00 am and will continue till 4pm.

Out of total 124 members of the KP assembly, 112 lawmakers are part of the Electoral College for the Presidential Election to poll their votes.

The PTI with 79 legislators on their benches emerged the single largest party with two-third majority whereas the combined opposition comprising ANP, MMA, PPP and PMLN have a total tally of 33.

The PTI has fielded its senior leader, Arif Alvi, MMA has put Maulana Falzur Rehman and PPP's Aitzaz Ahsan are in the race for the election for the office of President. The election would be held through secret balloting procedure.

It merits to mention here that 12 seats of the provincial legislature are vacant where by election are due on September 10 (PK 23) and October 14. The PTI has vacated seven seats whereas one seat was vacated by ANP. The election on two Constituencies were postponed due to death of candidates in the suicide blasts at Peshawar and DI Khan.

According to party position, PTI is in comfortable position to win the presidential election from KP electoral body.

Strict security arrangements are in place to ensure conduct of the election in peaceful atmosphere.
