PTI terminates Sher Afzal Marwat’s party membership

Disciplinary action follows Marwat’s recent remarks about Saudi Arabia, which resulted in his removal from key party committees as per directives of the party founder

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-August 3rd, 2024) Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has officially terminated the party membership of Sher Afzal Marwat due to significant breaches of party discipline.

PTI’s Additional Secretary General Firdous Shamim Naqvi announced the decision and referred to Marwat's infractions as the reason for his expulsion.

A four-member inquiry committee was formed to investigate the allegations.

The disciplinary action followed Marwat’s recent remarks about Saudi Arabia, which resulted in his removal from key party committees as per directives of the party founder.

Previously, he had accused senior party officials of playing a role in his ousting from the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee, claiming that Senator Shibli Faraz had alerted the party founder about concerns raised by the Saudi ambassador regarding his nomination.

Marwat had also suggested that Saudi Arabia was involved in the PTI government's fall in 2022 through a no-confidence motion.

Last month, Marwat received a show-cause notice regarding his conduct, but the committee found his response unsatisfactory.

However, Barrister Gohar, the PTI chairman, expressed confusion over Marwat’s membership status, stating that he was not informed about the decision to revoke it. He indicated plans to consult with the party's founder on this issue, highlighting that he was unclear about who made the termination decision and claiming that the founder had not authorized it.

Prior to this, Marwat’s membership had been suspended due to alleged violations of party discipline, as noted in a notification from PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub. The inquiry committee was assigned to look into accusations that Marwat's public statements harmed the party's image and strained relationships with other members.

In May, the party issued a show-cause notice after Marwat publicly criticized fellow leaders. The notice pointed out that he had made reckless statements contradicting the party's established positions, despite being instructed by the PTI founder to avoid such remarks.

Marwat, who represents the NA-41 constituency in the National Assembly, faced allegations of damaging ties with his colleagues through his comments and actions.
