ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 20th Jul, 2025) The authorities have announced to reopen Rawal Dam’s spillways on Monday morning at 6:00 a.m. for five hours, as a precautionary measure in view of further monsoon rainfall forecast for the Federal capital.
According to Deputy Commissioner office the water level in the reservoir has reached approximately 1,748 feet, nearing its maximum capacity of 1,752 feet, prompting the need to release excess water to avoid overflow.
He said the spillways would remain open for five hours and residents of low-lying and adjacent areas were advised to take necessary safety precautions during the discharge period.
He said that emergency services including Rescue 1122, WASA, and other departments had been placed on high alert, while monitoring teams were deployed at vulnerable points like bridges and streams.
He said the spillways were last opened earlier this week for more than six hours after heavy rains led to a rise in the dam’s water level, but were closed once the level receded.
He said the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) had also issued a flood advisory in view of continued monsoon activity expected in Islamabad and other parts of the country until July 25.
He urged citizens to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay away from water bodies, adding that all relevant departments were closely monitoring the situation.
