KARACHI, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 21st Jun, 2018 ) :A three member bench of the Supreme Court (SC) at the Karachi Registry Wednesday ordered removal of oil tankers' terminal located very close to sea side in Shirin Jinnah Colony, Clifton within 15 days time.
The bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Sajjad Ali Shah and Justice Munib Akhtar observed that the oil tankers were not only a cause of serious health risk but also constantly exposed the residents of the area to untoward incidents due to specific nature of the inflammable item carried by them.
The court was hearing a petition filed by a resident of Clifton, who had requested the CJP to order shifting of the oil tankers' terminal from her locality.
They were also a threat for marine life as vehicles were washed with sea water leading to discharge of hazardous chemical residue into sea at grave cost of nature, the court observed.
Ordering removal of the unauthorized terminals from the residential area, the bench also took strong exception to the fact that the oil tankers' owners and drivers, despite repeated directives of the Karachi administration, did not move their tankers to a site already reserved for the purpose.
The court also expressed reservations with regard to inability of the administration to be assertive enough in ensuring implementation of its orders.
Meanwhile, the same bench hearing another case sought open auction for leasing out state land so as to ensure transparency in the process of land allotment.
The bench also directed the provincial government authorities to ensure immediate payment of salaries to the employees of Sindh Small Industries Corporation (SSIC) and clearance of dues of its retired employees without any further delay.
