Senate body for probing irregularities in appointment of PIA German CEO

Senate Special Committee on PIA Performance Wednesday recommended bringing back the ousted German Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the national flag-carrier and holding an investigation into the irregularities committed in his appointment

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 14th Feb, 2018 ) :Senate Special Committee on PIA Performance Wednesday recommended bringing back the ousted German Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the national flag-carrier and holding an investigation into the irregularities committed in his appointment.

The committee meeting, chaired by Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah, also asked the Foreign Office to take up the issue with German embassy for transparent investigation, a press release said. Adviser to PM on Aviation Sardar Mehtab Abbasi agreed that appointing the German CEO was not the correct decision.

He informed the body that the agreement signed by the former CEO had been annulled to save Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) from more financial losses. The PIA, he said, recently received an offer of $1.4 million Dollars for an aircraft, which the former CEO tried to sale in just 47 thousand Euros.

The CEO had also intention to sale six engines along with a plane for only $170,000, he added. Convener Muzaffar Hussain Shah said the committee had been making effective recommendations for transforming the PIA into a profit-earning entity, adding "It will be a last meeting of the committee as Senate election is approaching nearer," he added.

The adviser said the present government took a number of measures to improve performance of the PIA and expressed confidence that it would come out of financial losses by year 2020. Among others, the meeting was attended by Senators Shireen Rehman, Farhatullah Babar, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, Usman Kakar, Mushahidullah Khan, Taj Muhammad Afridi, Col (Retd) Tahir Mashahadi, Nauman Qazir Khattak, Shahid Syed, Nighat Mirza and senior officials of the Aviation Division.
