ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 17th Oct, 2018 ) :Senate Standing Committee on Commerce and Textile on Wednesday discussed the issue of import of fresh fruits and vegetables from the neighboring countries including Iran and Afghanistan due to which the local farmers of Balochistan province were facing problems.
The meeting of the committee was held here under the chairmanship of Senator Shibli Faraz and was attended by Senators Nuzhat Sadiq, Dr Ghous Muhammad Khan Niazi, Ata ur Rehman, Nauman Wazir Khatak, Aurengzeb Khan, Ahmed Khan, and Mir Kabir Ahmed Muhammad Shahi.
Senator Mir Kabir Ahmed said when local crop of fresh fruits and vegetables was ready to be harvested, a huge quantity of the commodities were imported from Afghanistan, Iran, and India due to which local farmers' had to sell them on nominal prices.
He alleged that Indian goods were being imported in the country with a label of Afghanistan. He said during the previous year, the government had banned opening of border due to which the local farmers got a sigh of relief but now again the goods were freely moving into the country.
He urged the committee chairman to send recommendation to the authorities concerned to banimport of fresh fruits and vegetables in the country.
