ISLAMABAD (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News / NNI - 21st March, 2019) Senate Standing Committee on Commerce and Textile Industry in its meeting on Thursday held a detailed and comprehensive briefing on review of the Textile Policy 2014-2019 and 2019-2024.The Committee met under the Chairmanship of Senator Mirza Muhammad Afridi here at the Parliament House on Thursday and was attended among others by Senators Rana Mahmood ul Hassan, Syed Shibli Faraz, Nuzhat Sadiq, Dr.
Ghous Muhammad Khan Niazi, Dilawar Khan, Nauman Wazir Khattak, Aurangzeb Khan, Ahmed Khan, Advisor to Prime Minister on Commerce and Textile Industry Abdur Razzak Dawood, Secretary Textile Industry Syed Iftikhar Babar and officials from Commerce and Textile Industry Divisions.The Committee members sought details as to why the textile sector exports have not increased as the years have gone by.
A number of reasons including energy outages, low seed quality, less demand of raw cotton, increased subsidies were cited as reasons for the same. The Committee was told that a number of measures in the new textile policy and new schemes will address many grievances of the textile sector with a focus on up-gradation both in terms of infrastructure and manpower.The Committee strongly recommended including representatives of at least two SMEs on the special taskforce on improving the textile sector.
It again reiterated the need to bring the Cotton Research Committee back under the control of the Textile Industry Division. NNI
