Senate of Pakistan, in its quest for promoting parliamentary diplomacy, has achieved another milestone as Senator Farooq H. Naek has been unanimously nominated Member of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) Committee on United Nations (UN) Affairs.
ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 15th Oct, 2018 ) :Senate of Pakistan, in its quest for promoting parliamentary diplomacy, has achieved another milestone as Senator Farooq H. Naek has been unanimously nominated Member of the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) Committee on United Nations (UN) Affairs.
The former Chairman Senate is likely to be elected for the slot during the meeting of Governing Council of the Committee on Wednesday October 18, 2018 in Geneva, Switzerland, to represent it on the UN related issues, said a press release.
Farooq H. Naek was nominated by Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani and seconded by the Speaker National Assembly. He had earlier remained Member of IPU Group on UN which resulted in close coordination between two bodies and as a result this permanent standing Committee on UN Affairs was formed.
In this context, Senator Farooq H. Naek said that it is pride moment for the Pakistani Parliament to represent Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) on forum of United Nations (UN) and it is a unique platform for Members of Parliaments (MPs) to engage with senior UN officials. The Committee helps to close the democracy gap between citizens' voices and global decision making. Its meetings ensure the voice of "we the people" is communicated to UN policy makers.
The Committee also aims to find ways for parliaments, who play a vital part in implementing global commitments to work better with the UN globally and nationally.
The MPs share ideas on mechanisms to monitor whether individual countries are honouring their international pledges. The Committee is assisted by an 18 member bureau that monitors and reports on the involvement of parliaments in UN activities in areas concerning sustainable development, peace building, UN budgets and reform, and human rights. The bureau conducts investigations, including field missions, to assess aid effectiveness and cooperation between parliaments and the UN in peace building and reconciliation efforts. The Committee's operations are part of overall work with the UN and on global governance. The Committee meets at our twice yearly Assemblies and is open to all Members.
Senator Shamim Afridi, Sher Ali Arbab member National Assembly (MNA) and Secretary General Amjed Pervez Malik represented Pakistan at Asian Parliamentary Assembly coordination meeting on the side lines of IPU Assembly in Geneva and invited remaining member countries to confirm participation in APA Committee meetings to be hosted by Senate of Pakistan.
The President of Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) Speaker of Turkish Grand Assembly and Secretary General APA appreciated the lead role being played by Pakistan.
