Sindh University arranges walk to observe the Environment Day

HYDERABAD, June 5 (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 05th Jun, 2017 ) : The World Environment Day was observed at University of Sindh Jamshoro, on Monday with an aim to emphasize significance of actions needed to improve environment.

The students and faculty members of Sindh University under the aegis of the Institute of Plant Sciences of the university arranged a walk from the institute to Ghulam Mustafa Shah Administration Block popularly known as AC-II in support of Vice Chancellor�s slogan of making the institution a �green university.

The aim of the walk was to spread awareness about planting trees and ensuring a cleaner environment at Sindh University. A large number of SU students despite summer vacations, took part in the walk.

Led by director of Institute of Plant Sciences Dr. Rabia Memon, the students taking part in the rally were carrying banners and placards with slogans reading "Save the environment", "Keep Jamshoro pollution free� and �Save forests".

They raised slogans to create awareness among local residents and motivate them to keep the town clean and green. Addressing the occasion participants, the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Fateh Muhammad Burfat highlighted the history and importance of the day.

He said that the day, observed every year on June 5 on the call of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for promoting worldwide awareness and call for action for protection of environment.

He said that it served as the "people's day" for doing something positive for environment and converted individual actions into a collective power that generated a positive impact on the planet earth.

"The day is observed to highlight a range of environmental problems, including climate change, waste management, unsustainable consumption, degradation of natural resources and extreme natural disasters", said the Vice Chancellor.

Speaking on the occasion, the director of the institute Dr. Rabia Memon said that the walk was arranged to raise awareness of the advantages of a clean environment and many students from her institute, despite summer vacations, had joined the walk for this great cause.

Professor of Sindh Rural Development Centre Dr. Shahabuddin Mughal informed that the campaign asked everyone to pledge to end illegal trade in wildlife, from ordinary citizens who could ensure that they did not buy prohibited products, to governments who could pursue a change though implementing effective policies to protect species and ecosystems.

Among others, Registrar Dr. Muhammad Saleem Chandio, Prof. Dr. Shahabuddin Mughal, Dr. Jamshed Baloch, Muhammad Ali Roshan Pathan and a number of students were present to observe the world environment day. Later, around 50 saplings were planted in the lawn of Institute of Plant Sciences. The institute would be planting 450 more saplings in another two months.
