Sports Board Punjab DG inaugurates medicine course

LAHORE, Nov 8 (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 08th Nov, 2016 ) : Director General Sports board Punjab Zulfiqar Ahmed Ghumman has said doping is one of the major challenges in modern sports era and a proper knowledge and training regarding the usage of medicines can save the sportsmen from doping threat.

He said this while speaking as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the three-day Sports Medicine Course at National Hockey Stadium here on Tuesday. Coaches from all provincial sports associations are participating in the beneficial activity.

Secretary Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) Khalid Mehmood and Secretary Punjab Olympic Association (PbOA) Idris Haider Khawaja were also present on this occasion. "It's the fundamental obligation of the sports federations and associations to make their male and female players aware of the terrible consequences of doping," said the DG and added: "There are several examples where top sports figures ruined their career only due to lack of sports medicine knowledge." He said it was a good effort on part of the organisers to conduct such a useful activity to clean the sports from doping.

"The Sports Board Punjab will take every measure to eliminate the use of stamina enhancing drugs in sports by extending best possible cooperation to the provincial sports bodies," he said. Ghumman said it was the need of hour to join hands to evolve a system to identity those who were involved in negative practice of doping and were giving life threatening banned substances under the cover of stamina improving drugs to sportsmen in a number of disciplines.

The course is being held under the auspices of Punjab Olympic Association. The objective of the course is to create awareness among the participants about the menace of doping in sports. Countries like Pakistan are more vulnerable to dangers and lethal consequences of doping because of lack of awareness about the use of drugs.

In next two days sports medicine experts will deliver lectures to highlight the importance of sports medicine knowledge. Every day at least 40 coaches will attend the course. APP/msa/rsd/ati
