Values based education can help prevent corruption: Acting Director NAB

PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th May, 2019 ) :National Accountability Bureau, Khyber Pakhtukhwa on Thursday arranged a seminar in collaboration with Qurtaba University of Science & Information Technology Peshawar on the topic "Ill effects of corruption on society".

The participants included more than 200 persons from university management, teaching faculty, and the students of different academic disciplines.

Dr Nawaz Qaisar, Acting Director (A&P), NAB (KP) delivered a talk to the audience.

While quoting a report of UNODC, he highlighted that effective anti-corruption could save around $ 2.6 trillion per annum which is urgently needed for healthcare, education, clean water, and other essential public service.

He said that NAB is strategically pursuing anti-corruption through awareness, prevention, and enforcement of law.

In his address, he pointed out the reasons why NAB collaborate with educational institutions which include a joint responsibility to build "Corruption Free Pakistan".

On what NAB expects from academia, he emphasized that youth must be aware of and committed to ethics, moral values, citizenship, honesty, and integrity; strive to foster a culture of integrity through character building societies; create a sense of civic right and duties; deliver values based education; encourage extensive research in areas related to anti-corruption; embed anti-corruption themes in curricula; and add momentum to anti-corruption movement among youth.

He invited a resolve from participants to jointly foster a culture of lawfulness to enable people access opportunities and live healthy and productive lives. We all must be ambassadors of anti-corruption in Pakistan, he concluded.

The seminar also included a declamation contest where students delivered thought provoking speeches on ill effects of corruption on society.

The top three winners of speech contest were encouraged with award of participation certificates and NAB souvenir.

The first position holder will be invited to participate and compete in inter university speech contest to be arranged by NAB in November/ December this year.

In his concluding remark, the Pro-Vice Chancellor emphasized that teachings of islam could be used as an effective tool to create good habits needed for prevention of corruption. The seminar ended with a symbolic walk by all participants to raise a united voice against corruption.

At the end, a meeting of Director (A&P) with the Members of Character Building Society of Qurtaba University was held in the office of Dr Saif ul Islam, Pro-Vice Chancellor in presence of faculty members and the Registrar Prof Dr Mansoor Khan.

The opportunities, ways, and means through which good values, habits, and practices could be established among youth were discussed.

Dr Nawaz Qaisar pointed out a need for development of "Professional Code of Conduct & Ethics" for each academic discipline and display the same in respective departments, offices, and class rooms as well as a three credit hour lecture on that code may be delivered to outgoing final semester students so that they reach the profession well trained and fully equipped with good values to practice on job.

The idea was highly appreciated and all suggested that Higher Education Commission may direct all Universities and degree awarding Institutes to develop and display such codes for effective value based professional development of students which will go a long way in efforts against prevention of corruption.
