WHO Mission visits Khyber Teaching Hospital for dengue outbreak assessment

World Health Organization (WHO) mission visited MTI Khyber Teaching Hospital on Wednesday for assessment of dengue outbreak as KTH is catering above 90 percent of the patients

PESHAWAR, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 20th Sep, 2017 ) : World Health Organization (WHO) mission visited MTI Khyber Teaching Hospital on Wednesday for assessment of dengue outbreak as KTH is catering above 90 percent of the patients.

According to a press release issued here, the WHO mission included Team Lead Health Emergencies WHO Country Office, Dr. Michael Lukwaya, Manager Infectious Hazard Management Regional Office, Dr.

Sheikh Muhammad Mamunur Malik, Advisory on Public Health in UK National Health Services, Rashida Bano along with Dr. Saeed Akbar and Dr. Sardar Hayat Khan WHO KP Chapter. The meeting was attended by Hospital Director, Dr.

Nekdad Khan, Medical Director, Prof Dr. Rooh-ul-Muqim, Prof Dr. Hashim Uddin Azam, Focal Person for Dengue, Associate Professor Dr. Wazir Mohammad Khan, Director Pathology, Dr. Muhammad Asghar, Nursing Director, Rehmat Ullah, Blood Bank Incharge and others.

The visit of WHO mission was conducted on the request of Health Department Khyber Pakthunkhwa, adds the press release. Hospital Director Dr. Nekdad Khan briefed the team about the overall arrangements made by the institution for the special facilitation and arrangement of dengue patients during the outbreak.

Medical Director Prof Dr. Rooh-ul-Muqim explained the clinical side, hospital admission and referral policy along with other international WHO protocols followed by the institution. Efforts made by provincial health department especially Secretary Health, Abid Majid were lauded in the dengue facilitation.

Director Pathology, Dr. Asghar briefed them about how pathology department is working round the clock and details of the screening were shared with them. All the laboratory facilities and treatment are being provided free of cost as directed by Health Department and board of Governors MTI KTH.

The team was told that as the influx was increasing day by day the hospital management has vacated two major units, ENT B 48 beds and Eye A 43 bedded, along with 16 beds from skin and psychiatry departments .

Prof Dr. Hashim Uddin Azam, Prof Dr. Wazir Mohammad shared their views and replied to quires regarding patient care. They explained the team about how they implement WHO and international protocols and guidelines.

The protocol and guidelines are displayed in different wards as well as clinics in the institution. Prof Dr. Hashimuddin stressed for a purposely build isolation unit with trained staff which will be very helpful in future and is the need of time.

He requested the WHO mission team for helping the institution to establish the said unit. Blood Bank incharge and focal person for dengue, Dr. Farman Ali explained them the data collection process of the patients and how it is shared with the stakeholders for prevention of dengue.

The team was told that so far 2247 patients were admitted in MTI KTH where 2022 were recovered and discharged while total dengue serology screen is 33084 out of which 6437 were positive till date.

It was also discussed in the meeting that the mortality rate is less as compared to Sri Lanka, Malasia and Singapore as it is below one percent. The WHO team visited different wards and facilitation center for dengue in MTI KTH.

The mission members appreciated the efforts made by hospital administration, clinical and non-clinical staff that is working day and night to facilitate the patients.
