Home based women workers from different parts of Karachi joined hands in large numbers to register their presence in a walk organized to mark culmination of global campaign "The 16 Days of Activism Against Women Focussed Violence 2018".
Carrying placards and banners these women mainly from Lyari, Baldia and Orangi Town attempted to draw attention of the authorities towards difficult situations they are faced with in supplementing to their family income and contributing to the national economy.
The walk organized by HomeNet Pakistan was also attended by women and workers associated with formal sectors, mainly industrial units and factories.
Latter addressing the participants of the walk leaders of the workers' community said injustice committed against working class under one or the other pretext led not only to f their financial instability but also had direct impact on their emotional, physical and social well being.
It was mentioned that discrimination against women workers and deep rooted bias against them was the major cause of violence in the society at varied levels.
Speakers including Sadaf Parveen (HBW), Naheed Syed (HomeNet), Habibullah Junaidi and Karamat Ali (PILER), Nargis Rehman (Women Forum of Pakistan), Madia Shaikhani (Shirkatgah), Nida Tanveer (HRCP), Shahida Sajid (Aurat Foundation), Aqeela Naz and Bindiya Rana (Society for Protection of Transgender Workers) demanded that cases of violence at workplace and domestic violence must be contained through efficient implementation of the laws aimed to address the menace.
Equal pay for all workers coupled with adequate and easily accessible healthcare facilities, social security and insurance cover for all categories of workers was also demanded on the occasion.
Speakers particularly drew attention towards growing gender gap at work and attributed the situation to growing shift in the workers' paradigm from formal to informal sectors hence denying them legal protection and social benefits.
It was urged that series of women and workers' friendly laws introduced in the country must be translated into actual and meaningful application.
