Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani national, was charged for a murder case by a US court and was sentenced to 86 years in prison.
Lahore (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 16th March, 2019) Dr Aafia Siddiqui, who is incarcerated in United States for the last 16 years, is expected to be repatriated.
Media reports have it that Dr Aafia Siddiqui will soon return home.
This was further confirmed by actor turned anchor Hamza Ali Abbasi who took to Twitter to hint about the development.
“Heard Dr Aafia Siddiqui will be home soon... Ya Allah madad❤️” he wrote.
Meanwhile, media reports said that the Afghan Taliban have also made the demand of Aafia Siddiqui's release to the US government amid Afghan peace negotiations.
Aafia Siddiqui was indicted by a New York Federal district court in September, 2008 on charges of attempted murder and assault stemming from an incident in an interview with US authorities in Ghazni, charges which she denied.
After 18 months in detention, she was tried and convicted in early 2010 and sentenced to 86 years in prison.
Earlier in June 2018, the Supreme Court of Pakistan had dismissed her sister Fowzia Siddiqui's plea seeking repatriation of her sister Aafia Siddiqui from the United States.
During the course of proceedings, the chief justice had observed that the Supreme Court of Pakistan had no authority to direct Americans and ordered the applicant to approach the US court regarding her grievances.
He said the court had taken up the matter only to know as to whether Aafia was alive or not. The court could not do anything in the matter as it had come into its knowledge that she was alive, he added.
