Actress Saboor Aly clarifies after her ‘window cleaner’ joke draws backlash

In the video, Saboor while pointing at the window cleaner says, “Her mother had sent her with big dreams but look what he is doing.”

Islamabad (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 11th May, 2019) Actress Saboor Aly has come under fire for making fun of a window cleaner at the sets of an upcoming drama.

In a video she posted on her Insta story, Saboor made fun of the window cleaner along with fellow actress Saheefa Jabbar.

In the video, Saboor while pointing at the window cleaner says, “Her mother had sent her with big dreams but look what he is doing.”

When she asks for Affan Waheed’s opinion, he says, “Doesn’t matter. He is working hard.”

The video spread like fire on social media and drew severe criticism.

Following the backlash, Saboor again took to Instagram to clarify her remarks in the video.

Saboor said that the 'window-cleaner' in the video was actually the AD (Assistant Director) of their upcoming play with whom they have worked for months.

She said that being colleagues we share a lot of jokes and funny moments.

“Our back and forth commentary on each other's activities is a norm on the sets; and of course as outsiders one wouldn't know, but at least give the other person a benefit of doubt as well before you start writing them off as being guilty,” she wrote.

Taking a dig at the bloggers who went hard on her, she said, “Is this what the reporting level has come down to? Is this irresponsible, irregular, non-authentic, hearsay publishing the new 'in' thing on social?”

The actress also quoted a Quranic verse for the social media warrior.

"O you who believe! If a Faasiq (liar) comes to you with any news, verify it, lest you should harm people in ignorance, and afterwards you become regretful for what you have done" - (QURAN - 49:6)

She further said that no where have we called him a window cleaner or made fun of any specific profession. “What was an inside joke with an individual, has been portrayed as an insult of the profession which was never the intention nor a fact even in the content that's still on my social media. Frankly these are just not the values I have been brought up with,” she wrote.

Schooling her critics, she said, “Next time you point your finger on someone's actions or words -especially when you are looking at them in isolation and not the whole picture -think and be responsible. Don't just do it for the followers, likes, and engagement.”
