Mehwish Hayat says it is refreshing to see sane voices prevail
Islamabad (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 27th March, 2019) Mehwish Hayat was called out by her haters as they deemed the actress as non-deserving of the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz.
The actress, who has starred in several Pakistani blockbusters including Punjab Nahi Jaungi, was awarded the civilian honour Tamgha-e-Imtiaz on Pakistan Day.
After she responded to this hate in her social media post, several celebrities are coming out in her support, whose Tamgha-e-Imtiaz award has stirred a controversy online.
Singer and activist Shehzad Roy said that people waste no opportunity to tear down the arts and women in Pakistan.
"People waste no opportunity to tear down the arts and women in Pakistan. So of course, if a woman wins an award in the arts, all hell would break loose. U @MehwishHayat won the debate that followed & created an enabling environment for women from arts to come forward, & when they do, trolls will think twice," the singer hit back at her haters.
The Load Wedding star also received backing from singer and actor Ali Zafar, who said "this reprehensible culture of name calling on Twitter has got to stop."
Journalist Hamid Mir also advised her to ignore negative propaganda and learn to live in an intolerant society by promoting tolerance.
Hailing Shehzad Roy's tweet, Mehwish called it a "watershed moment" for the industry where sane voices still prevail.
"It is so refreshing to see that sane voices still prevail. I think that this is a watershed moment. The industry needs to come together and fight this abuse that we are all subjected to. Let's make something good come from it," she responded.
Mehwish Hayat had earlier penned down a note for her haters on social media.
Acclaimed actress Mehwish Hayat was conferred with Tamgha-i-Imtiaz in the Pakistan Day ceremony held on March 23.
An investiture ceremony was held at Aiwan-e-Sadr Saturday evening where President of Pakistan Dr Arif Alvi conferred civil awards to individuals demonstrating feats in different fields of science and arts.
At least 171 personalities, including some foreigners, were selected for this year's awards.
Among several artists, Mehwish Hayat was conferred with one of the highest civil awards, Tamgha-i-Imtiaz, for her contribution to Pakistan’s entertainment industry.
