Pakistanis unhappy over US brand copying Sindhi Ajrak design

The design is being termed as ‘Brick Multi’ and is available on retail websites for sale.

Islamabad (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 8th April, 2019) A New York-based brand has used Sindhi Ajrak in its designs and Pakistanis are unhappy with it.

While Ajrak represents Sindhi culture and its sanctity is unquestionable, the US brand used its patterns in one of its top.

The design is being termed as ‘Brick Multi’ and is available on retail websites for sale. The item is priced at Rs 47,000.

Pakistanis are however condemning the stealing of Ajrak’s design and are asking for credit. This has sparked a new controversy on Twitter.

Author Bina Shah contested that this is not a "brick multi", it is Sindhi Ajrak from the land of Sindh, Pakistan.

She said, “We're not very happy that you've used this cloth to make a top without acknowledging the origin of the cloth, or where you sourced it from.

Similarly, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Sherry Rehman also expressed her reservation over copying of this design.

Other people are also not happy with ‘multi bricks’ design.

This is not the first time that Sindhi Ajrak design has been copied by international brands. In the past, American company Urban Outfitters used the pattern on some of their swimwear and marketed it as ‘Moroccan Print’.

Similarly, American fashion brand Forever 21 also sold items with the similar design and called it ‘Baroque Print’.
