CFL: Redblacks Upset Stampeders In Thrilling Grey Cup

CFL: Redblacks upset Stampeders in thrilling Grey Cup

TORONTO, Canada, , (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 28th Nov, 2016 ) - Henry Burris threw three touchdowns including the game winner to Ernest Jackson in overtime as the underdog Ottawa Redblacks captured their first Grey Cup title in their short franchise history on Sunday.

Burris's 18-yard strike to Jackson lifted Ottawa to a 39-33 win over the heavily-favored Calgary Stampeders to cap a thrilling Canadian Football League championship contest. Jackson bobbled the short toss from Burris but with no Stampeder defender in sight he had time to hang on and make it into the endzone on the Redblacks first drive of the extra session.

American Burris then failed to hit Khalil Paden for the two-point conversion, but it didn't matter because the Stampeders couldn't muster any offense on their lone possession. Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell's third-down pass went off Bakari Grant's hands as Ottawa posted one of the biggest upset victories in Grey Cup history.

Burris finished with three touchdown passes, ran for two more and was named the MVP of the contest in front of a sold out crowd of 33,421.

"For all those haters out there, their organizations haven't won a Grey Cup in decades, but ours, in three years, here we are, Grey Cup champions," Burris said.

Burris almost didn't play Sunday as his left knee locked up during the pre-game warmup. He went to the trainers' room for repairs and returned in time for the opening kickoff. The game could be the final one of Burris's brilliant 17-year CFL career, which includes three Grey Cup rings and two Grey Cup MVPs.

The 41-year-old, who played US college football for Temple University, said he wants to sit down and talk to his family before deciding on his future. It was the third game in Grey Cup history to go to overtime and first since 2005 when Edmonton beat Montreal 38-35 in Vancouver.

Calgary finished with a league best 15-2-1 record while the Redblacks finished with an 8-9-1 mark on the season.
