Turkey meets all the conditions to be elected as the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship (Euro-2024) hosting country, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday adding that the rumors about the crisis in the country are not true.
MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 26th September, 2018) Turkey meets all the conditions to be elected as the 2024 UEFA European Football Championship (Euro-2024) hosting country, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday adding that the rumors about the crisis in the country are not true.
The UEFA Executive Committee will choose the Euro-2024 hosting country in the Swiss city of Nyon on Thursday. Turkey and Germany submitted two bids for hosting the event. Earlier this week, the president of the Bayern Munich football club, Ulrich Hoeness, said that it would be irresponsible to give Turkey a right to host the competition due to the economic problems in the country.
"Turkey fulfilled all the conditions necessary for the successful outcome [the UEFA choice] ... The rumors about the economic situation in Turkey are not true.
Turkey is a very dynamic and rich country in terms of tourism. One should not have even doubts that the stadiums during the European Championship will be overcrowded and therefore the sponsor and advertisement revenues will rise," Erdogan told the RevierSport media outlet, which is a part of the Funke media group.
The Turkish president added that the country had built many sport facilities, stadiums and no other European country has such developed sport infrastructure.
Since the beginning of the year Turkey's lira dropped in price by over 40 percent. The economic situation further worsened in August, when US President Donald Trump authorized the doubling of previously imposed import tariffs on Turkish aluminum and steel to 20 percent and 50 percent, respectively.
