FIFA Authorizes Video Assistant Referee Use at Upcoming Russian Cup Games - Statement

FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB) have authorized the use of video assistant referee (VAR) in upcoming Russian Cup matches, the Russian Football Union (RFS) said Tuesday in a statement

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 02nd April, 2019) FIFA and the International Football Association board (IFAB) have authorized the use of video assistant referee (VAR) in upcoming Russian Cup matches, the Russian Football Union (RFS) said Tuesday in a statement.

"[On Tuesday] we received official information from FIFA and IFAB, according to which the use of the VAR system is authorized for the first matches of the Russian Cup semi-finals, namely Lokomotiv Moscow vs Rostov and Ural Yekaterinburg vs Arsenal Tula. The games will be held on April 3 in Moscow and Yekaterinburg. This decision was the result of hard work of the RFS and project team on VAR implementation in Russia," the statement reads.

The VAR system allows an assistant referee to review decisions of the head referee with the use of video footage and replays.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia was the first major competition using VAR in full.
