The FIFA Council recognized the 2018 World Cup in Russia as the best in the event's history, a member of the council, Alexey Sorokin, told Sputnik on Friday.
ST PETERSBURG (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 26th October, 2018) The FIFA Council recognized the 2018 World Cup in Russia as the best in the event's history, a member of the council, Alexey Sorokin, told Sputnik on Friday.
The meeting of the council was held earlier in the day in Rwanda.
"A FIFA report was presented [at the meeting]. It contained a phrase pleasant for us: on the basis of the conducted analysis, the 2018 World Cup in Russia can be recognized as the best in history on the basis of a number of criteria, namely the availability of infrastructure, purity of the sports aspect, and good organization of the competition in general," Sorokin said.
He added that the tournament was assessed by FIFA as a huge success for Russia from both football and non-football points of view.
From June 14 to July 15, Russia hosted the FIFA World Cup for the first time in its history. Matches were played in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Rostov-on-Don, Sochi, Yekaterinburg, Saransk, Kaliningrad, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Volgograd, and Samara. The competition was won by France.
