Former Pakistan Woman Sharmeen Laid To Rest

Former Pakistan woman cricketer and one of the founder of women cricket in the country, Sharmeen Khan was laid to rest in Defence graveyard here on Thursday.
Sharmeen,46, who returned from England a couple of days ago,died on Wednesday night due to pneumonia. Women cricket circles and member of the National women cricket team have termed cricketer her sudden demise as tragic.
She will be known in Pakistan women cricket history books for her efforts for forming the first ever national women team along with her sister Shazia Khan.
She represented the country in two test matches and 26 one-day internationals as a right handed batsman and a pacer.
Sharmeen made her Test debut against Sri Lanka Women at Colombo in April 1998 and two years later played her last Test against Ireland Women at Dublin .
She made her ODI debut against New Zealand Women at Christchurch in January 1997 and played her last ODI against Sri Lanka Women at Moratuwa in January 2002.
Sharmeen and Shazia,both studied at Leeds in England,and will always be remembered as the founders of Pak women team at a time when fewer women national teams around the globe were playing international circket. They conceived the idea of forming Pak women team after watching the World Cup final at Lord's.
After long struggle spanning many years and sincere efforts, the sisters were finally able to introduce Pakistan at the forum of international women cricket council by getting its membership which paved the way for Pak women team to represent the country at the highest level of the game,the 1997 World cup staged in India.
