North and South Koreas are seeking to field joint teams in four disciplines at the 2020 Winter Games in Tokyo, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced Friday
"The IOC agreed to continue studying, in particular with the respective International Federations (IFs), the request ... for unified Korean teams to take part in qualification," it said.
Delegates from both national Olympic committees and government officials presented their bid to take part in qualifications for women's basketball, women's hockey, mixed judo and rowing at a trilateral meeting.
Any result of these talks will need the approval of the IOC Executive board, which will next meet in the French city of Lausanne on March 26-28.
"The discussions at the working meeting today are one further step showing how sport can once more make a contribution to peace on the Korean Peninsula and the world," IOC President Thomas Bach said.
The two Koreas also made a presentation declaring their historic initiative to jointly host the 2032 Olympic Games. South Korea's sports Minister Do Jong-hwan promised to work with his counterpart to successfully bid for the games.
