Sydney, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 18th May, 2018 ) :Irish striker Roy O'Donovan was slapped with a 10-week suspension Friday for his flying karate-like kick on Lawrence Thomas during the A-League Grand Final, one of the longest bans given in the Australian competition.
The 32-year-old, who plays for the Newcastle Jets, caught Melbourne Victory keeper Thomas in the face with his studs after throwing himself at a lofted ball during the dying moments of his team's 1-0 Grand Final loss earlier this month.
The Football Federation Australia's disciplinary committee deliberated for three days before it determined O'Donovan committed "serious foul play", handing the striker the 10-match ban.
The Jets on Friday announced they would appeal the decision.
"The Newcastle Jets are extremely disappointed with the outcome of this hearing and will immediately lodge an appeal on O'Donovan's behalf," Newcastle said in a statement. O'Donovan was handed an eight-week ban in 2016 while playing for the Central Coast Mariners for a head-butt on Wellington Phoenix player Manny Muscat.
Mariners goalkeeper Danny Vukovic holds the record for the longest suspension in A-League history with a nine-month ban for striking a referee in 2008.
