The National Youth Boxing Championship will be staged in Karachi by the end of February wherein pugilists from all the four provinces, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) will be seen in action
"This championship will be for both male and female boxers of under 18," Secretary Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) Nasir Tung told APP on Thursday.
He said that bouts for male boxers would be held in eight weight categories, while competitions for female pugilists would be held in five weight categories.
"It will be for the first time that female boxers will be contesting in a National Youth Championship," he said adding that the event would help promote women boxing in the country. The federation, he said was following International Olympic Committee's (IOC) agenda of gender equality.
Nasir said that the federation would also hold National Ranking Championship in March, this year in which boxers from different departmental teams as well as those of regions would take part. "Boxers of all weight categories will get a chance to showcase their skills in the event and rise to prominence at the national level.
"These events will provide us a chance to closely monitor the skills of our pugilists and then select them for international assignments," he added.
Nasir said that after the conclusion of the National Ranking championship the federation would announce rankings of national pugilists in all weightcategories. "This ranking will be announced purely on the basis of merit," hesaid.
