Reigning IndyCar series champion Josef Newgarden won the weather-interrupted Grand Prix of Alabama on Monday after rain halted the race at the weekend.

Team Penske driver Newgarden sealed his third career victory in the two-hour timed race at the demanding 2.

3 mile circuit, leading for 71 out of 82 laps. Newgarden came home ahead of Ryan Hunter-Reay of Andretti in second, with James Hinchcliffe of Schmidt-Peterson in third as racing finished in heavy rain.

The 27-year-old Newgarden had started the resumed race in the lead after leading for each of the 23 laps completed in Sunday's racing.
