Red Sox ink pitcher Eovaldi to four-year contract

The Boston Red Sox agreed to a four-year contract with free agent pitcher Nathan Eovaldi, who played a key role in this year's World Series triumph over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Los Angeles, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 7th Dec, 2018 ) :The Boston Red Sox agreed to a four-year contract with free agent pitcher Nathan Eovaldi, who played a key role in this year's World Series triumph over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Terms of the deal were not announced but MLB.com reported it was worth $68 million.

"We're very happy to have Nathan back with us," Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said in a statement.

"He did a tremendous job for us last season, playing a significant role in helping us win the division and the World Series.

"His performance in the post-season was outstanding, both as a starting pitcher and as a reliever." Eovaldi, 28, was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays on July 25, and went 3-3 with a 3.

33 ERA in 11 starts and one long-relief appearance.

In 22 1/3 playoff innings he allowed only four earned runs.

Eovaldi, who has undergone two Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgeries, produced an epic six-inning relief stint in Boston's 18-inning loss in game three of the World Series in Los Angeles.

Eovaldi came on in the 12th inning and threw 97 pitches. Even though he took the loss, the gritty performance drew plaudits not only from his Red Sox teammates but also from the Dodgers.

Boston's move to retain Eovaldi follows their re-signing of World Series Most Valuable Player Steve Pearce, who agreed to a one-year, $6.25 million contract in November.
