RugbyL: Troubled Foran Told To Take Psychological Test

WELLINGTON, , (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 15th Feb, 2017 ) - Troubled Kieran Foran will have to pass a psychological test before he can play for the New Zealand Warriors, the National Rugby League (NRL) club said Wednesday, following a string of personal problems.
The talented five-eighth signed with the Warriors in September but the NRL delayed registering the contract while it assessed his mental health. It followed a turbulent 2016 in which Foran walked out of a lucrative contract with the Parramatta Eels and attempted suicide while suffering depression exacerbated by a relationship break-up.
The 26-year-old's gambling activities and links to high-profile professional gambler Eddie Hayson also came under scrutiny by the NRL's integrity unit. Warriors managing director Jim Doyle said the NRL had now agreed Foran could play for the Auckland-based team from round three of the upcoming season, which starts March 2, provided he passes the psychological test.
"We have seen Kieran's progress over the last few months and we are confident he will be ready for round three," he said. NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg said that before taking the field, Foran would undergo psychological assessment to ensure months of rehabilitation had left him ready to face the pressures of the game.
"Kieran will only be allowed to play again in the NRL if that assessment is positive," Greenberg said. "Conditions will also be placed on his contract relating to integrity matters following the investigation into his gambling associations last year." In July, Foran said allegations that his former club, Manly, may have been involved in matches that were fixed were "heartbreaking" and defended his relationship with Hayson, according to reports.
Foran, capped 20 times for New Zealand, will return for the Warriors match against the Bulldogs in Dunedin on Friday, March 17, if he is deemed mentally fit.
