Sabathia Suspended Five Games In 2019 For Plunking Sucre

New York, Sept 30 (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 30th Sep, 2018 ) :New York Yankees' pitcher CC Sabathia has been suspended five games and fined an undisclosed amount for throwing at Tampa Bay Rays catcher Jesus Sucre in a game on Thursday.

Sabathia was ejected from the game with one out in the sixth after hitting Sucre on the thigh -- apparently in retaliation after Rays pitcher Andrew Kittredge fired a fastball behind the head of the Yankees Austin Romine.

Sabathia's premature departure in his last scheduled start of the regular season came as he was two innings away from completing 155 innings for the season and collecting a $500,000 incentive bonus payment.

Sabathia could still earn the bonus, if he is sent in to pitch in relief in Sunday's regular-season finale in Boston.

Major League Baseball said Sabathia was appealing the penalty. If it is upheld, it will be served at the beginning of the 2019 regular season.

But the pitcher said Saturday he wasn't surprised at the suspension.

"I knew something was going to come down," he said.

Kittredge was given a three-game suspension and an undisclosed fine.
