South Korea May Propose Co-Hosting 2032 Summer Olympics With Pyongyang - Sports Minister

South Korea may propose to North Korea to co-host the 2032 Summer Olympic Games during the third high-level inter-Korean summit later in September, South Korean Sports Minister Do Jong-hwan said on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 12th September, 2018) South Korea may propose to North Korea to co-host the 2032 Summer Olympic Games during the third high-level inter-Korean summit later in September, South Korean sports Minister Do Jong-hwan said on Wednesday.

"It's a proposal of hosting the events in Seoul and Pyongyang," Do told reporters as quoted by Yonhap news Agency.

According to the minister, the joint co-hosting of such events will contribute to regional peace.

These remarks were made ahead of his meeting with Japanese and Chinese counterparts in Tokyo.

Do added that South Korea also considers a possibility of co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Asian neighbors such as North Korea, China and Japan, if, for example, China wins the right to organize the event.

"We heard that China is going to make a bid to host the World Cup ... But we want to make a proposal of co-hosting the event with Asian neighbors like North Korea, China and Japan.

In this way, we can maintain the current atmosphere of peace and can connect Northeast Asia peace with peace on the Korean Peninsula," the minister added.

During last week's South Korean delegation's visit to the North, the two sides agreed to hold a new bilateral summit between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and the North's leader, Kim Jong Un, during the former's planned visit to Pyongyang on September 18-20.

The high-level negotiations will be the third meeting between the two politicians, following their historic April summit and May talks in Panmunjom.

The upcoming Kim-Moon talks are expected to be dedicated to the issues of implementation of the so-called Panmunjom peace declaration they signed in April. The document seeks to settle the humanitarian issues between Seoul and Pyongyang, reiterates their goal to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula and to reach the formal end of the Korean War in the near future.
