India bans TikTok app

TikTok was not available for download in India on Google’s Play Store nor Apple’s App Store since Wednesday morning.

Lahore (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 17th April, 2019) The Indian government has ordered Google and Apple to take down the Chinese-owned Tiktok video app after a court expressed concerns over the spread of pornographic material.

After weeks of speculation and legal tussle, India has finally banned the video-sharing app TikTok.

One of the most popular mobile apps in the world, TikTok was not available for download in India on Google’s Play Store nor Apple’s App Store since Wednesday morning.

The Indian Supreme Court had on Monday rejected a Tiktok appeal to suspend the Madras high court’s order imposing a ban on the app.

The court will hear the case again on 22 April.

“We have faith in the Indian judicial system and we are optimistic about an outcome that would be well received by over 120 million monthly active users in India,” Tiktok said in a statement Tuesday.

The case was launched by an activist group which said the app encouraged paedophiles and pornography.

TikTok has become a popular social media platform as people continue to use the app for making dramatic videos.

The app allows the users to create and remix short videos. TikTok has become quite popular in Pakistan in recent months and its videos often go viral on other social media sites.

A large number of users, mostly youth, use it to upload and browse lip sync videos and memes.

The app is addictive while its use has landed certain people in trouble.

In a recent incident, a 19-year-old man was allegedly shot dead by his friend in Delhi as they posed with a pistol to make a TikTok video.
