MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 24th April, 2019) The Philippines is not worried about any threat from Chinese 5G technologies, including those developed by Huawei, and has its own way to protect itself, Philippine Undersecretary of National Defense Cardozo M. Luna told Sputnik in an interview.
The United States has banned Huawei products in its government offices for fear that the Chinese company's technology might be used for espionage. Huawei, which is one of the major global 5G equipment producers, has taken the US government to court over this measure.
"A lot of other countries are using Huawei without being threatened of security. Why only be concerned about Huawei. There are a lot of other communication companies that are now operating in the Philippines. That is Globe, Smart and others.
We have our own way of protecting ourselves. We are not worried," Luna said.
The undersecretary stressed that the Philippines was "open" and "transparent." When asked whether the Philippines might ban Huawei products, Luna said he did not think so.
"Because if we think that way, there are a lot of other possibilities that our security can be threatened. Not only Huawei. We have currently put up a department, the department of communications. And it is the one in charge of looking into this," Luna said.
The United States has reportedly urged its European allies to exclude Huawei from their 5G development plans.
However, the European Union issued a recommendation asking each country to assess its own security risks, rather than demanding a ban on Huawei.
