Punjab expands free Wi-Fi service to 22 districts

Punjab Safe Cities Authority spokesperson says over 700 locations have now been covered

LAHORE: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-July 19th, 2025) In a significant step towards digital transformation, the Punjab government has expanded its free Wi-Fi service across the province, extending the facility to 22 districts and over 700 key locations.

Punjab Safe Cities Authority spokesperson said that the initiative was expanded on the special directives of the Punjab chief minister. The initiative aims at making internet access more inclusive and accessible for the public.

As part of the expansion, the number of free Wi-Fi hotspots in Lahore increased from 230 to 430.

The service, previously available in 11 districts, is now functional in 22 districts including Lahore, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Gujrat, Jhelum, Attock, Hasan Abdal, Sahiwal, Okara, and Murree. A total of 710 locations across these districts are now offering free internet access to the public.

In a major technological upgrade, the service has been shifted to Wi-Fi 6 — the latest and fastest generation of wireless technology — enabling improved connectivity and higher-speed internet access for users.

More than 37.22 million users have benefited from the service so far as they consumed approximately 905 terabytes (TB) of data. The service is helping citizens streamline their day-to-day tasks, particularly in areas with limited access to mobile data or broadband.

The Safe Cities spokesperson emphasized that while the free Wi-Fi network is aimed at public convenience and emergency use, it is not intended for video streaming or entertainment purposes.

The CM reiterated the government’s commitment to modernize Punjab and turn it into a fully digital province as the plans are underway to expand the free Wi-Fi network to more areas in the coming months.
