The UK government will promote clean energy innovation in the construction sector by giving 36 million pounds ($47.27 million) to a consortium led by the country's Swansea University that is expected to develop new building materials, able to generate electricity from light and heat, the country's Treasury said in a statement on Wednesday.

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 19th September, 2018) The UK government will promote clean energy innovation in the construction sector by giving 36 million Pounds ($47.27 million) to a consortium led by the country's Swansea University that is expected to develop new building materials, able to generate electricity from light and heat, the country's Treasury said in a statement on Wednesday.

The initiative is part of the UK Industrial Strategy, which aims at enhancing UK economic growth by introducing innovation.

"Swansea University and the innovative companies working with it are world-leaders in clean energy. The UK government is backing the industries of the future that will deliver jobs and opportunities across Wales. This 36 million new funding will support exciting green technology that could cut energy bills, reduce carbon emissions and create better homes and workspaces," UK Chancellor Philip Hammond said during his visit to Swansea University, as quoted on the UK government's website.

According to the statement, if these innovative materials replace the regular ones, walls, roofs and windows will be able to generate electricity, which a smart operating system would then release.

The announcement is in line with the UK government's pledges to decrease new buildings' energy use by at least 50 percent by 2030 and support jobs in emerging industries. The UK government has invested seven billion pounds in the research and development area since fall 2016.
