The Inter-American Development Bank announced in a statement that it will not host its annual meetings of the boards of governors in China at the end of this month
WASHINGTON,(UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 23rd March, 2019) The Inter-American Development Bank announced in a statement that it will not host its annual meetings of the boards of governors in China at the end of this month.
"The board of Executive Directors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) today resolved that the Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors will not be held in Chengdu, People's Republic of China, from March 28 to 31, 2019," IDB said in a press release on Friday.
The organization said it will come up with recommendations for a new location and date within 30 days.
The IDB spokesman, Paul Constance, told Sputnik that he was not authorized to comment on the reasons behind the bank's decision to change the meeting location.
"Unfortunately we are not authorized to address the reasons for resolution. You would need to contact the governors or finance miniseries if IDB member countries to ask them," the spokesman told Sputnik on Friday.
Earlier on Friday, US Vice President Mike Pence wrote in an editorial in the Miami Herald newspaper that China was undermining the Western Hemisphere's progress towards democracy by refusing to grant a visa to Ricardo Hausmann, who is a representative of self-proclaimed Interim President of Venezuela Juan Guaido.
Pence said China's action marks the first time in the history of the IDB that a host nation has refused to seat a member.
In January, US-backed opposition leader Guaido illegally declared himself interim president of Venezuela after disputing Nicolas Maduro's reelection victory in May. Washington immediately endorsed Guaido, called on Maduro to step down, and seized billions of Dollars' worth of Venezuela's oil assets.
Maduro has accused the United States of trying to orchestrate a coup in order to install Guaido as a puppet leader beholden to Washington. Russia, China, Cuba, Bolivia, Turkey and a number of other countries have voiced their support for Maduro as the only legitimate president of Venezuela.
